Great Britain 1770 half penny
This specimen was lot 24006 in Heritage sale 3020 (Long Beach, September 2012), where it sold for $822.50. The catalog description noted, "George III Halfpenny 1770, Tower Mint, 1st Issue, MS65 RB NGC, about 50% golden red mixed with brown toning. First year of this classic copper type." This type is listed for 1770-75 and is scarce even in worn condition. The mint did not produce near enough small change for the industrial boom of the eighteenth century, leading to a proliferation of private tokens. The situation would not be rectified until the reform of 1817.
Recorded mintage: unknown but not rare.
