Genoa 1691-ITC 2 scudi Dav-LS553
This specimen was lot 21235 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Philadelphia, August 2018), where it did not sell. The catalog description noted, "ITALY. Genoa. 2 Scudi, 1691-ITC. NGC AU-58. Madonna and child on clouds, two cherubs above with stars between; Reverse: ornate cross with 4 cherub heads and wings in angles, legend around. Unusually nice quality for this usually crude type with bold details and nearly complete legends. Pervasive and attractive dark gray toning with a hint of blue sheen that pops out when tilted in the light. By all means an impressive example destine[d] for a fine cabinet." The republic of Genoa simultaneously struck scudi stretti, scudi largi, and double scudi (shown here). This type is listed for 1638-1719 tho not struck every year.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 76 g, silver, this specimen 76.17 g.
