Stack's Bowers 2015 NYINC sale, lot 633

This specimen was lot 633 in Stacks-Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2015), where it sold for $1,997.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Frankfurt. Taler, 1764-GNPCB. NGC MS-64. Tied with one other for finest certified. Faint mottled toning with underlying lustrous surfaces and sharp features. From the Rockaway Collection." After suspending the production of thalers in 1717, Frankfurt burst into action in 1762-67, issuing Dav-2219 thru Dav-2225. This type, one of several for 1764, is scarce but not rare.
