This specimen was lot 30776 in Heritage sale 3064 (Chicago, April 2018), where it sold for $960. The catalog description[1] noted, "Louis XVI gold Louis d'or 1790/89-T AU Details (Cleaning) PCGS, Nantes mint. Slightly brightened from past cleaning with some darker color around the reverse peripheries that is the result of imperfect planchet preparation. An extremely rare date, listed but unpriced in the Standard Catalog of World Coins and in Monnaies Royales Françaises by Victor Gadoury. This is the first example we have seen." A rare issue from the Nantes mint, which struck large numbers of this louis in 1786-88 as old French gold was recoined.

Recorded mintage: 26,642, unpriced in Droulers[2].

Specification: 7.65 g, .917 fine gold, 22-23 mm diameter, designed by Benjamin Duvivier.
