France SB817-22261r.jpg

This specimen was lot 22261 in Stack's Bowers ANA Auction (Denver, CO, August 2017), where it sold for $822.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Louis d'Or, 1788-W. Lille Mint. Louis XVI (1774-1790). NGC AU-53. Good strike with attractive soft satin luster. Ex: Coin Galleries Sale 08/1984, Lot #338." The years 1786-87 are common as the mints melted down and reminted old tenor gold, but the later dates (1788-92) are much scarcer. Droulers gives this date a slightl premium while Gadoury rates it as common.

Recorded mintage: 173,761.

Specification: 7.65 g, .917 fine gold, 22-23 mm diameter, designed by Benjamin Duvivier.

Catalog reference: KM-591.15; Fr-475, Gad-361, Dr/4 no. 881.
