France SB118-22520r.jpg

This specimen was lot 22520 in Stack's Bowers 2018 NYINC sale (New York, January 2018), where it sold for $552. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Louis d'Or, 1787-I. Limoges Mint. Louis XVI (1774-93). NGC AU-58. Good strike, highly lustrous and quite attractive." The years 1786-87 are common for the louis d'or à la tête nue as the mints melted down and reminted old tenor gold, but the later dates (1788-92) are much scarcer. This date from the Limoges mint is somewhat scarce.

Reported Mintage: 108,936[2], a common date.

Specification: 7.65 g, .917 fine gold, 22-23 mm diameter, designed by Benjamin Duvivier.

Catalog reference: Fr-475; KM-591.7; Gad-361, Duplessy 1707; Ci-2183; Dr/4 no. 881, Dr/2 no. 605
