Jean Elsen sale 125, lot 1773
This specimen was lot 1773 in Jean Elsen sale 125 (Brussels, June 2015), where it sold for €3,600 (about US$4,789 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XVI (1774-1793), AV louis d'or aux lunettes, 1777-L, Bayonne. Dit "au buste habillé". 2e semestre. D/ B. à g., en habit brodé, les cheveux noués par un ruban. R/ Ecus ovales de France et de Navarre inclinés sous une couronne. Extrêmement rare Fines traces d'ajustage et petite griffe au droit presque Superbe. (kingdom of France, Louis XVI (1774-93), gold louis d'or of the eyeglasses of 1777, Bayonne mint, second semester. Obverse: bust to left in embroidered coat, hair tied in a ribbon; reverse: oval arms of France and Navarre under a crown. Extremely rare, fine adjustment marks and small obverse scratch, about extremely fine.)"
This type was struck in limited numbers 1774-85 and was melted when the gold louis was reduced to 7.65 g in 1786. Few survive.
