This specimen was lot 1355 in Jean Elsen sale 113 (Brussels, June 2012) where it did not sell. The catalog description[2] noted,
"FRANCE ROYALE, Louis XV (1715-1774), AR demi-écu à la vieille tête, 1771 T, Nantes. Droit : Tête l. à gauche. Revers : Ecu de France couronné, entre deux rameaux d'olivier. Extrêmement Rare. Fines traces d'ajustage. Petit éclat du flan sur la tranche. Superbe. (France, Louis XV, 1715-74, silver half écu of the old head, 1771, Nantes mint. Obverse: Laureate head to left; reverse: crowned arms of France between two olive branches. Extremely rare, minor adjustment marks, small rim bump, extremely fine.)"
The same specimen was lot 1708 in Künker sale 263 (Osnabruck, June 2015), where it sold for €2,600 (about US$3,359 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[3] noted,
"KÖNIGREICH Louis XV, 1715-1774. 1/2 Ecu "à la vieille tête" 1771, T, Nantes. Sehr selten in dieser Erhaltung. Kleiner Schrötlingsfehler, vorzüglich +. (kingdom of France, Louis XV, 1715-74, half écu of the old head of 1771, Nantes mint. Very rare in this grade, small planchet cracks, extremely fine or better.)"
This is a rare date of a rare type struck 1771-74.
