This specimen was lot 1490 in Jean Elsen sale 116 (Brussels, March 2013), where it sold for €880 ($1,336 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"FRANCE ROYALE, Louis XV (1715-1774), AV double louis d'or au bandeau, 1745 BB, Strasbourg. Droit: Tête à gauche, ceinte d'un bandeau. Revers: Ecus ovales de France et de Navarre sous une couronne. Provient de notre vente 80, 12 juin 2004, 1998. Très Beau à Superbe (kingdom of France, Louis XV (1715-74), gold double louis d'or au bandeau of 1745, Strasbourg mint. Obverse: head to left, hair tied in a ribbon; reverse: oval arms of France and Navarre, crown above. From Jean Elsen sale 80, lot 1998. Very fine to extremely fine.)"
This type was struck 1742-73 in some numbers but the Strasbourg mint issued this type 1742-49, 1756-64, 1766-72 only. It is one of a series of large issues of 1743-49, probably necessitated by the need to pay troops fighting in Germany during the War of the Austrian Succession. It was succeeded by the double louis d'or à la vieille tête.

Recorded mintage: 183,220.

Specification: 16.31 g, .917 fine gold, reeded edge, 28-29 mm diameter, designed by J.-C. Roéttiers; this specimen 16,23g.
