This coin, called a double sol aux 2 L couronnés, was an attempt by the government to displace all the low grade silver pieces circulating in France since the time of Louis XIII. It was theoretically equal to 24 deniers but was actually worth much less. Most survivors today are in poor condition. The type was struck 1738-69. The first specimen was part of lot 29023 in Heritage sale 3064 (Chicago, April 2018), which sold for $288. The catalog description[2] noted, "Trio of Louis XV 2 Sols (Sous Marqués), ...3) 1739-V XF, Troyes mint. Medium gray, slightly weak at the right obverse. From the Doug Robins Collection of Canadian Tokens." The second specimen was lot 29025 in Heritage sale 3064 (Chicago, April 2018), where it sold for $240. The catalog description[2] noted, "Louis XV 2 Sols (Sou Marqué) 1739-V AU Details (Corrosion, Cleaned) NGC, Troyes mint, R8. Stops around tour différent. Blotchy silver and gray surfaces, a few spots of corrosion remaining. A rare date-mint. From the Doug Robins Collection of Canadian Tokens."

Recorded mintage: 986,587[1], a fairly common date.

Specification: 2.18 g, .250 fine silver, 21-22 mm diameter, plain edge, designed by J.-C. Roéttiers.

Catalog reference: KM 500.21, Vlack-193 (first), Vlack-191a (second), Gad-281, Dr/2 no. 595, Dr/4 no. 859.
