France 1731W ecu rev JElsen 112-1240.jpg
This specimen was lot 1240 in Jean Elsen sale 112 (Brussels, March 2012) where it sold for € 120 (about US$188 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"FRANCE ROYALE, Louis XV (1715-1774), AR écu aux rameaux d'olivier, 1731 W, Lille. Droit: B. habillé à gauche, décoré de la croix du Saint-Esprit. Revers: Ecu de France couronné, entre deux rameaux d'olivier. Nettoyé. Petites taches. Très Beau à Superbe. (Kingdom of France, Louis XV, silver écu with olive branches of 1731, Lille mint. Obverse: uniformed bust to left, wearing the cross of the Order of the Holy Spirit; reverse: crowned arms of France between two olive branches. Cleaned, small marks, Very Fine to Extremely Fine.)"
Many Lille mint issues are rare but this one is fairly common. The SCWC reports 1726-31, 1733-40 from this mint; Droulers adds 1732. The type was struck 1726-40 during the reign of Louis XV of France. This coin was part of the great coinage reform of Cardinal Fleury which finally terminated the manipulations which had disrupted the economy since the 1690's.

Recorded mintage: 82,189.

Specification: 29.49 g, .917 fine silver, 39-41 mm diameter, edge lettered, DOMINE SALVUM FAC REGEM, this specimen 29,37 g.

Catalog reference: KM 486.1, Dav-1330, Dr/4 no. 819, Dr/2 no. 579, Dupl-1675; Ci., 2117; Gad-321.
