France SB818-20413r.jpg

This specimen was lot 20413 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Philadelphia, August 2018), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Louis d'Or, 1722-L. Bayonne Mint. Louis XV (1715-74). NGC MS-64. Identified as the louis d'or aux deux L type in France and struck from 1720 to 1723 during the John Law period. VERY SCARCE as a type when compared to the slightly later (1726-40) louis d'or aux lunettes issues. Struck from rusty dies, this piece showcases plenty of luster with some remnant adjustment marks at the far edges. The very finest example of this date and mint combination graded by either NGC or PCGS." This type was struck 1720-23 from twenty-seven mints but is very rare. Its initial face value was 54 livres, which was lowered to 39 livres 12 sols on demonetization (August 1723). This type was superseded by the louis d'or Mirliton, palmes longues, struck 1723-25. That coin in turn was superseded by the louis d'or aux lunettes, struck 1726-40.

Recorded mintage: unknown ("flans neufs" only).

Specification: 9.79 g, .917 fine gold, 24-26 mm diameter, reeded edge, designed by Norbert Roéttiers.
