France 1722-BB louis d'or

Jean Elsen sale 141, lot 1407
This specimen was lot 1407 in Jean Elsen sale 141 (Brussels, June 2019), where it sold for €2,600 (about US$3,446 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XV (1715-1774), AV louis d'or aux 2 L, 1722BB, Strasbourg. Flan neuf. D/ B. nu, lauré à d. R/ Deux L adossés sous une couronne, entre trois lis. Rare Fines traces d'ajustage. Superbe. Provient de notre vente 69, 16 mars 2002, 2054. (kingdom of France, Louis XV, 1715-74, gold louis of the two "L's" of 1722, Strasbourg mint, new blank. Obverse: laureate nude bust right; reverse: two back-to-back "L's" under a crown between three lilies. Rare, fine adjustment marks, Extremely Fine.)"
This type was struck 1720-23 from twenty-seven mints but is very rare so there is little price difference between the mints. Its initial face value was 54 livres, which was lowered to 39 livres 12 sols on demonetization (August 1723). This type was superseded by the louis d'or Mirliton, palmes longues, struck 1723-25. That coin in turn was superseded by the louis d'or aux lunettes, struck 1726-40.
