France H3040-29673r.jpg

Droulers[1] notes this French type, called a louis d'or à la croix du Saint Esprit, was struck 1718-19 and replaced the louis d'or de Noailles, which was 12.23 grams. This specimen was lot 29673 in Heritage sale 3040 (Chicago, April 2015), where it sold for $3,055. The catalog description[2] noted, "Louis XV gold Louis d'or à la croix du Saint-Esprit 1718-W MS64 NGC, Lille mint. Nearly gem, this dazzling gold selection features the young laureate head of King Louis XV and the round arms of France centered within the cross of the Holy Spirit. Full-bodied luster is readily apparent as are glorious, honey-gold surfaces that glisten from every angle. A bit of softness within the legends does little to detract from the eye-appeal of this otherwise boldly-detailed offering."

Recorded mintage: 111,600 plus 29,943 of the louis d'or de Noailles.

Specification: 9.79 g, .917 fine gold, 24-25 mm diameter, reeded edge, designed by Norbert Roéttiers.

Catalog reference: KM 438.18, Dr/4 no. 796, Dr/2 no. 532, Fr-453.
