France SB118-20207r.jpg

This specimen was lot 20207 in Stack's Bowers 2018 NYINC sale (New York, January 2018), where it sold for $27,600. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. 2 Louis d'Or, 1716-S. Reims Mint. Louis XV (1715-74). PCGS AU-58. double louis d'or aux insignes struck in 1716 only and a VERY RARE type. The sole certified example at either PCGS or NGC. This one appears to be struck over a double louis d'or au soleil of Louis XIV (Fr-443) of indeterminate date and mint. In an old green label PCGS holder. Decently struck with soft satin luster but no obnoxious nicks or hairlines. A real prize for the advanced collector of either French gold or World gold types." This is the first example of this scarce type we are able to post on the Wiki despite being struck at twenty-two mints in 1716 (plus Pau). It had a face value of 40 livres tournois. The early years of Louis XV saw many manipulations of the gold coinage, with the result that the double louis was usually skipped. A few double louis d'or Mirliton are known for 1723-24, after which the next double Louis is the double louis d'or au bandeau of 1742-70.

Reported Mintage: est. 7,600 plus more on "reformed" blanks.

Specification: 16.31 g, .917 fine gold, 31-32 mm diameter, reeded edge, designed by Norbert Roéttiers.

Catalog reference: Fr-447; KM-426.10; Gad-343a, Dr/4 no. 790, Dr/2 no. 526.
