France SB818-20408r.jpg

This specimen was lot 20408 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Philadelphia, August 2018), where it did not sell. The catalog description[2] noted, "FRANCE. 2 Louis d'Or, 1713-L. Bayonne Mint. Louis XIV (1643-1715). NGC AU-55. A VERY RARE double louis d'or au soleil from a type struck 1710-15. Gadoury notes this date as "R4", though none are common. Boldly detailed, this example possesses vibrant color and very few visible handling marks; a few raised die lines and touch of as-struck flan roughness further contribute to the overall character. Our first offering of this type (although it was from a different mint) since our sale of the Kroisos Collection (New York, January 2008 where it hammered for $16,000)." This is the last type of double louis struck during the Sun King's life. The type was struck 1710-15 in limited numbers. This is a common date for the type but all dates are scarce.

Recorded mintage: unknown but few[1].

Specification: 16.31 g, .917 fine gold, 29-30 mm diameter, reeded edge, designed by Joseph Roéttiers.

Catalog reference: Fr-443; Gad-264; Dupl-1448; Ciani-1810; Dr/5 no. 277, Dr/4 no. 403, Dr/2 no. 277.
