Jean Elsen sale 141, lot 1355
This specimen was lot 1355 in Jean Elsen sale 141 (Brussels, June 2019), where it sold for €2,000 (about US$2,651 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XIV (1643-1715), AV demi-louis d'or au soleil, 1712M, Toulouse. D/ T. à d., coiffée d'une perruque laurée. R/ Croix formée de huit L couronnés, cantonnée de quatre lis, avec un soleil en coeur. Très rare Fines griffes. presque Superbe. (kingdom of France, Louis XIV, 1643-1715, gold half louis of the sunburst of 1712, Toulouse mint. Obverse: peruked and laureate head right; reverse: cross formed of eight crowned "L's", cantonned with four lilies with a sunburst at the center. Very rare, fine scratches, about Extremely Fine.)"
This type is catalogued as a demi-louis d'or au soleil, struck at various mints 1709-15. Despite some substantial mintages, the type is rare, rarer than the preceding demi-louis d'or aux insignes of 1701-09. Its face value was 10 livres.

Specification: 4.08 g, .917 fine gold, 19-21 mm diameter, reeded edge, designed by Joseph Roëttiers, this specimen 4,01 g.
