Jean Elsen sale 145, lot 1155
This specimen was lot 1155 in Jean Elsen sale 145 (Brussels, September 2020), where it sold for €4,000 (about US$5,700 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XIV (1643-1715), AV double louis d'or au soleil, 1711K, Bordeaux. D/ T. à d., coiffée d'une perruque laurée. R/ Croix formée de huit L couronnés, cantonnée de quatre lis, avec un soleil en coeur. Extrêmement rare Légères traces de monture. Très Beau. Provient de Sotheby, Londres, janvier 1981. (kingdom of France, Louis XIV, 1643-1715, gold double louis d'or of the sunburst of 1711, Bordeaux mint. Obverse: peruked bust to right; reverse: cross formed of eight crowned "L's", cantonned with four lilies, with a sunburst at the center. Extremely rare, light mount mark, Very Fine.)"
This is the last type of double louis struck during the Sun King's life. The type was struck 1710-15 in limited numbers. Rare dates don't obtain a premium as all dates are rare.

Specification: 16.31 g, .917 fine gold, 29-30 mm diameter, reeded edge, designed by Joseph Roëttiers, this specimen 16,03 g.
