France 1702W louis dor rev H3030-23541.jpg

This specimen was lot 23541 in Heritage sale 3030 (New York, January 2014), where it sold for $3,818.75. The catalog description[1] noted, "Louis XIV gold Louis d'Or 1702-W, Lille Mint, MS64 NGC, a choice example with exceptionally bold design features and full mint brilliance. The legends (including the date) are remarkably sharp with only faint evidence of the overstrike on an earlier coin. Rare and highly desirable in this quality. From The Formosa Collection." This type is usually found struck over older coins, a process involving all French silver and gold coinage during 1690-1709. These "reformations" were the result of financial manipulations too tedious to discuss here. The louis d'or aux 8 L, struck 1700-04, was succeeded by the louis d'or aux insignes struck 1704-09. Droulers[1] gives this date from the Lille mint no premium over the common date (1701-A) but none are cheap.

Recorded mintage: unknown but common for the type.

Specification: 6.75 g, .917 fine gold, corded edge, designed by J. Roettiers.

Catalog reference: KM 334.21, Gad-253.
