France SB118-20203r.jpg

This specimen was lot 20203 in Stack's Bowers 2018 NYINC sale (New York, January 2018), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. 1/2 Louis d'Or, 1701-C. Caen Mint Louis XIV (1643-1715). ANACS AU-50. demi-louis d'or aux huit L et aux insignes from a RARE type struck 1701-03. This date is NOT listed in Gadoury or the SCWC. It is struck over a demi-louis aux quatre L of 1694. Despite the often-derided ANACS holder, we have no quibble with the assigned grade as the portrait, date and mint are bold and clear with no obnoxious problems. Our first offering of this type. Well struck with a bold portrait, lustrous and attractive." The demi-louis d'or aux 8 L et aux insignes is much scarcer than its larger brother. This type was struck 1701-03 at numerous mints. All the dates are rare but the Paris mint issues are the only ones that turn up with any frequency.

Reported Mintage: unlisted date in Droulers, Gadoury or the SCWC.

Specification: 3.37 g, .917 fine gold, 21 mm diameter, reeded edge, designed by Joseph Roëttiers.

Catalog reference: Fr-437; KM-332.3; Gad-241, Dr/4 no. 423, Dr/2 no. 271.
