Jean Elsen sale 141, lot 1298
This specimen was lot 1298 in Jean Elsen sale 141 (Brussels, June 2019), where it sold for €5,500 (about US$7,289 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XIV (1643-1715), AV double louis d'or aux quatre L, 1699A, Paris. Flan neuf. D/ T. âgée à d., coiffée d'une grande perruque laurée. R/ Croix formée de quatre lis couronnés, cantonnée de quatre L. Très rare Exemplaire bien frappé sur un flan large et régulier. presque Superbe/Superbe. (kingdom of France, Louis XIV, 1643-1715, gold double louis of the four "L's" of 1699, Paris mint, new blank. Obverse: laureate and peruked old head right; reverse: cross formed of four crowned lilies cantonned with four "L's". Very rare, well struck on a large and round blank, about Extremely Fine/Extremely Fine.)"
This type is usually found struck over older coins, a process involving all French silver and gold coinage during 1690-1709. These "reformations" were the result of financial manipulations too tedious to discuss here. The double louis d'or à l'écu was succeeded by the double louis d'or aux 4 L struck 1693-1700. Droulers[2] prices this issue as a fairly common date altho the type is too rare and expensive to be collected by date.

Recorded mintage: 8,750, all fn[2].

Specification: 13.5 g, .917 fine gold, reeded edge, 28-30 mm diameter, designed by Joseph Roéttiers, this specimen 13,51 g.

Catalog reference: Dr/4 no. 399, Dupl-1439; Gad-260; Fr-432, KM 303.1.
