Jean Elsen sale 120, lot 1249
France 1697A ecu rev JElsen 120-1249.jpg
The specimen shown is an écu aux palmes ("écu with palms") struck in Paris during the reign of Louis XIV. This type was struck 1693-1701 in large quantities, mostly overstriking older écus ("flans reformés"--this specimen is a "flan neuf"). It was succeeded by the écu aux insignes. This specimen was lot 1249 in Jean Elsen sale 120 (Brussels, March 2014), where it did not sell. The catalog description[2] noted,
"FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XIV (1643-1715), AR écu aux palmes, 1697 A, Paris. Flan neuf. Droit: B. cuirassé à droite. Revers: Ecu de France rond, couronné, entre deux palmes. Nettoyé. Porosité du flan au droit. Très Beau. (kingdom of France, Louis XIV (1643-1715), silver écu of the palms of 1697, Paris mint, new planchet. Obverse: armored bust to right; reverse: crowned round arms of France between two palm branches. Cleaned, pitting on the obverse, very fine.)"
Droulers[1] prices this date as a common date, but even a common date is priced 20% higher than an écu à la mèche longue.

Recorded mintage: 872,533 "flans neufs" plus an unknown number of "flans reformés."[1]

Specification: 27.45 g, .917 fine silver, 38-41 mm diameter, edge lettered DOMINE SALVVM FAC REGEM, this specimen 26,99 g.

Catalog reference: Dupl-1520; Gad-217. Dr/4 no. 510, Dr/2 no. 410, Dav-3813, KM 298.1.
