France 1695-W 1/16 ecu

Jean Elsen sale 134, lot 1698
This specimen was lot 1698 in Jean Elsen sale 134 (Brussels, September 2017), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,
"FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XIV (1643-1715), AR seizième d'écu de Flandre aux palmes, 1695W, Lille. 2e réformation. D/ B. cuir. à d. R/ Ecu rond couronné entre deux palmes, écartelé aux armes de France, Bourgogne nouveau, Bourgogne ancien et Navarre. De la plus haute rareté Réformé sur un seizième d'écu de Flandre de 1686. Petite griffe au droit. Belle patine. Très Beau/Superbe. (kingdom of France, Louis XIV, 1643-1715, silver 1/16 écu of Flanders of the palms of 1695, Lille mint, second reformation. Obverse: armored bust to right; reverse: round arms between two palms, quartering the arms of France, new Burgundy and old Burgundy. Very rare, struck over a 1/16 écu of 1686. Minor scratches on obverse, nice patina, very fine to extremely fine.)"
This seizième d'écu de Flandre aux palmes was struck 1694-99 at Lille only and is rare. The Lille mint also struck 1/8, 1/4, half and full écus de Flandre in the 1690's. The face value was initially 5 sols 9 deniers but raised to 6 sols in October 1693.

Recorded mintage: unknown but all on "reformed" blanks.

Specification: 2.35 g, .857 fine silver, 20-21 mm diameter, this specimen 2,21 g.
