This specimen was lot 20201 in Stack's Bowers 2018 NYINC sale (New York, January 2018), where it sold for $3,360. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Louis d'Or, 1694-W. Lille Mint Louis XIV (1643-1715). NGC MS-64. louis d'or aux quatre L from a type struck on new and old blanks 1693-1700. Single finest certified example at either NGC or PCGS. This is a slightly better date of one of the more common louis d'or types of Louis XIV. Highly lustrous and flashy with the portrait slightly weak from being struck over an older coin." This type was struck 1693-1700 and is the second reasonably common type after the scarce dates of the 1670's and 1680's. The louis d'or à l'écu was succeeded by the louis d'or aux 4 L struck 1693-1700.

Reported Mintage: 31,600 on new blanks plus 33,486 restruck.

Specification: 6.75 g, .917 fine gold, reeded edge, designed by Joseph Roéttiers.
