France 1694-V 1/2 louis d'or

Jean Elsen sale 141, lot 1303
This specimen was lot 1303 in Jean Elsen sale 141 (Brussels, June 2019), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,
"FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XIV (1643-1715), AV demi-louis d'or aux quatre L, 1694V, Troyes. 2e réformation. Seulement 2.346 p. frappées. D/ T. âgée à d., coiffée d'une grande perruque laurée. R/ Croix formée de quatre lis couronnés, cantonnée de quatre L. Extrêmement rare. Très Beau. Provient de notre vente 130, 10 septembre 2016, 1045. (kingdom of France, Louis XIV, 1643-1715, gold half louis of the four "L's" of 1694, Troyes mint, second reformation, only 2,346 pieces struck. Obverse: laureate and peruked old head right; reverse: cross formed of four crowned lilies cantonned with four "L's". Extremely rare, Very Fine.)"
This type, known as a demi-louis d'or aux 4 L, was struck 1693-1700, mostly over older coins. Many mints contributed but all in small quantities and the type is rare today. This is a previously unconfirmed date.

Recorded mintage: 12,655, all rf[2].

Specification: 3.37 g, .917 fine gold, 20-21 mm diameter, reeded edge, this specimen 3,33 g.
