France 1694-BB 35 sols
This coin, called a thirty five sols de Strasbourg, was one of the first issues of that mint after its capture by the French. This specimen was lot 27014 in Heritage sale 3026 (Long Beach, October 2013), where it sold for $211.50. The catalog description[2] noted, "Louis XIV 1/2 Ecu (34 Sols) 1694-BB, XF. Strasbourg Mint. A bit flat on the highpoints with light purple blushes with some overlying earthen green color." The obverse legend, "MONETA NOVA ARGENTINENSIS," means "new silver coin;" the reverse legend, "SIT NOMEN DOMINI BENEDICTVM," is "Blessed be the name of the Lord." The greenish color comes from the debased alloy.
Recorded mintage: 2,338,890[1], all struck over XXX sols of 1684-89.
