This specimen was lot 40165 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2019), where it sold for $3,120. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. 2 Louis d'Or, 1693-B. Rouen Mint. Louis XIV (1643-1715). NGC AU Details--Tooled. 4 cruciform L's. Most of the raised detail remains sharp with surfaces that show evidence of past cleaning as well as moderate smoothing on Louis XIV's neck and the lower right obverse field. As a type, extremely elusive in this double Louis d'Or weight." This type, known as a double louis d'or aux 4 L, was struck 1693-1700, mostly over older coins. Twenty-four mints contributed in 1693.

Recorded mintage: 1,420 fn + unknown rf + 7,170 double louis d'or à l'écu.

Specification: 13.50 g, .917 fine gold.
