Jean Elsen sale 144, lot 1696
This specimen was lot 1696 in Jean Elsen sale 144 (Brussels, March 2020), where it sold for €3,050 (about US$4,019 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XIV (1643-1715), AV double louis d'or à l'écu, 16939, Rennes. Flan neuf. Tranche cordonnée. D/ T. à d., coiffée d'une perruque laurée. R/ Ecu de France couronné. Extrêmement rare Nettoyé. A été monté. Très Beau. Le type à l'écu est le seul des monnaies d'or françaises sur lequel figure la légende SIT NOMEN DOMINI BENEDICTVM, normalement réservée aux monnaies d'argent. (kingdom of France, Louis XVI, 1643-1715, double gold louis of the shield of 1693, Rennes mint, new blank, reeded edge. Obverse: laureate and peruked bust right; reverse: crowned arms of France. Extremely rare, cleaned, has been mounted, Very Fine. This is the only French gold coin to bear the motto SIT NOMEN DOMINI BENEDICTVM, normally reserved for silver coins.)"
The Rennes mint also struck double louis d'or aux quatre L in 1693. Both types are rare.

Recorded mintage: 10,456 fn + 1,116 rf. This date reported, not confirmed[2].

Specification: 13.50 g, 0.917 fine gold, 28-30 mm diameter, reeded edge, this specimen 13,43 g.
