France SB118-20199r.jpg

This specimen was lot 20199 in Stack's Bowers 2018 NYINC sale (New York, January 2018), where it sold for $1,500. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Louis d'Or, 1691-L. Lille Mint. Louis XIV (1643-1715). NGC AU-58. The louis d'or à l'écu was struck 1690-93. The crowned "L" mintmark indicates Lille, which used this mintmark 1686-93 before switching to the "W" used until the 1850's. Gadoury lists this date as "R4" on new blanks and "R" on reformed blanks. We believe this specimen to be struck on a new blank as we don't see any undertype nor a star at the base of the arms of France. Flashy and lustrous with a slight striking weakness at the base of the king's neck." This type was struck 1690-93 and is the first reasonably common type after the scarce dates of the 1670's and 1680's. The louis d'or à l'écu was succeeded by the louis d'or aux 4 L struck 1693-1700.

Reported Mintage: 28,314 on new blanks plus an unknown number restruck.

Specification: 6.75 g, .917 fine gold, plain edge, designed by Joseph Roéttiers.

Catalog reference: Fr-429; KM-278.20; Gad-250; Dupl-1435a; Ciani-1797; Droulers-343; DFW-243.
