Jean Elsen sale 122, lot 869
France 1691D demi-ecu rev JElsen 122-869.jpg
This specimen was lot 869 in Jean Elsen sale 122 (Brussels, September 2014), where it sold for €120 (about US$184 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XIV (1643-1715), AR demi-écu aux huit L, 1691 D, Lyon. 1er type. 1e réformation. Droit: B. drapé à droite. Revers: Croix formée de huit L couronnés, cantonnée de quatre lis. Coup au droit. Très Beau. (kingdom of France, Louis XIV (1643-1715), silver half écu of eight L's of 1691, Lyon mint, first reformation. Obverse: draped bust to right; reverse: cross formed of eight crowned "L's" divides four lilies. Rim nick, very fine.)"
The specimen shown is an demi-écu aux 8 L ("écu with 8 L's") struck in Lyon during the reign of Louis XIV of France. This type was struck 1690-93 in France in large quantities, mostly overstriking older demi-écus ("flans reformés"--see the specimen shown for the visible undertype). It was succeeded by the demi-écu aux palmes. Droulers[1] prices this date as fairly common, but even a common date is priced 20% higher than a demi-écu à la mèche longue.

Recorded mintage: unknown but fairly common, all "reformed".

Specification: 13.72 g, .917 fine silver, 32-35 mm diameter, edge lettered DOMINE SALVVM FAC REGEM, designed by Joseph Roéttiers, this specimen 13,53 g.

Catalog reference: Dr/4 no. 616, Dr/2 no. 399, Dupl., 1515A; Ci., 1890; Gad-184.
