Jean Elsen sale 141, lot 1292
This specimen was lot 1292 in Jean Elsen sale 141 (Brussels, June 2019), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,
"FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XIV (1643-1715), AR demi-écu aux huit L, 1691L couronné, Lille. 1er type. 1e réformation. D/ B. dr. à d. R/ Croix formée de huit L couronnés, cantonnée de quatre lis. Très Beau. (kingdom of France, Louis XIV, 1643-1715, silver half écu of the eight "L's" of 1691, crowned L mintmark, Lille mint, first type, first reformation. Obverse: draped bust right; reverse: cross formed of eight crowned "L's", cantonned with four lilies. Very Fine.)"
The specimen shown is an demi-écu aux 8 L ("half écu with 8 L's") struck in Lille during the reign of Louis XIV. This type was struck 1690-93 in France in large quantities, mostly overstriking older demi-écus ("flans reformés"--see the specimen shown for the visible undertype). It was succeeded by the demi-écu aux palmes. Droulers[2] prices this date as fairly common, but even a common date is priced 20% higher than a demi-écu à la mèche longue. The crowned "L" mintmark was superseded in 1693 by the "W" mintmark as a regular "L" was already assigned to Bayonne. This date is also recorded with a different hairstyle (Dr/4 no. 605).

Recorded mintage: 113,304 fn + unknown rf[2].

Specification: 13.72 g, .917 fine silver, 31-32 mm diameter, plain edge, this specimen 13,31 g.

Catalog reference: Dr/4 no. 597, Dr/2 no. 397, Dupl-1515A; Gad-184.
