France SB118-20195r.jpg

This specimen was lot 20195 in Stack's Bowers 2018 NYINC sale (New York, January 2018), where it sold for $5,760. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Louis d'Or, 1679-A Paris Mint Louis XIV (1643-1715). NGC MS-64. "louis d'or à la tête virile" from a rather scarce type struck 1675-84. Single finest certified example at either NGC or PCGS. Between the "louis d'or à la mêche longue" (1646-59) and the "louis d'or à l'écu" (1690-93) run a series of rare types, often lumped together as "louis d'or juvénile." This one, showing the Louis XIV with a mustache at the age of 41, shows the king in his prime. Sharply struck, without flaws and highly lustrous." After some substantial mintages during the period 1646-53, the production of louis d'or dwindled until the great reminting of the 1690's. There are many fascinating types issued during the intervening period, all rare, including this one, the louis d'or à la tête virile, minted 1675-84.

Reported Mintage: 382,641.

Specification: 6.75 g, .917 fine gold, plain edge, designed by François Warin.

Catalog reference: Fr-425; KM-236.1; Gad-248; Dupl-1430, Dr/4 no. 376, Dr/2 no. 243.
