Jean Elsen sale 141, lot 1247
This specimen was lot 1247 in Jean Elsen sale 141 (Brussels, June 2019), where it sold for €320 (about US$424 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XIV (1643-1715), AR écu au buste juvénile, 1671L, Bayonne. 2e type. D/ B. à d., les cheveux longs, l., dr. et cuir., orné d'une Victoire. R/ Ecu de France couronné. Rare Fine griffe et brisure du coin au droit. Très Beau. Provient de notre vente 57, 6 mars 1999, 205. (kingdom of France, Louis XIV, 1643-1715, silver écu of the juvenile bust of 1671, Bayonne mint, second type. Obverse: draped and armored bust right with long hair; reverse: crowned arms of France. Rare: fine scratches and die clash, Very Fine.)"
This écu au buste juvénile was struck 1665-77 and is the third subtype for this bust. It was minted at Rouen (mintmark B), Bayonne (L, shown here), Rennes (9) and Aix (&).

Recorded mintage: 65,634, a better date of the type.

Specification: 27.45 g, 39-41 mm diameter, plain edge, engraved by Jean Warin, this specimen 27,26 g.
