France SB118-20194r.jpg

This specimen was lot 20194 in Stack's Bowers 2018 NYINC sale (New York, January 2018), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Louis d'Or, 1670-A. Paris Mint Louis XIV (1643-1715). NGC AU-58. A decent example of the "louis d'or juvénile à la tête nue" struck at Paris 1668-80. Much scarcer than the preceding louis d'or à la mèche longue or the succeeding louis d'or à l'écu, and most survivors have been mounted, which this one has not. Good strike with no apparent defects." All louis d'or juvénile of this period are rare. This type, with the bare head of the king, was struck 1668-82, overlapping the louis d'or juvenile, tête laurée of 1658-72.

Reported Mintage: est. 269,000.

Specification: 6.75 g, .917 fine gold, plain edge, designed by Jean and François Warin.

Catalog reference: Fr-423; KM-219.1; Gad-247, Dr/4 no. 364, Dr/2 no. 231.
