Jean Elsen sale 141, lot 1168
This specimen was lot 1168 in Jean Elsen sale 141 (Brussels, June 2019), where it sold for €700 (about US$928 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XIII (1610-1643), AV écu d'or au soleil, 1640X, Amiens. D/ Ecu de France couronné, sous un soleil. La légende débutant à 12h. La lettre d'atelier à la pointe de l'écu. R/ Croix anillée et fleurdelisée. Un point au centre. Rare. Très Beau à Superbe. Provient de notre liste 233, juillet-septembre 2005, 1472. (kingdom of France, Louis XIII, 1610-43, gold shield of the sunburst of 1640, Amiens mint. Obverse: crowned arms of France under a sunburst, obverse legend begins at 12 o'clock, mintmark at bottom of shield; reverse: voided floriate cross, dot at center. Rare, Very Fine - Extremely Fine.)"
This type was struck 1611-44 and was the standard gold coin of France prior to the introduction of the milled louis d'or in 1641. The Amiens mint placed its mintmark on the obverse rather than on the reverse as the other mints did. Gadoury notes this as a slightly scarce date.

Recorded mintage: 12,625.

Specification: 3.37 g, .958 fine gold, plain edge, this specimen 3,34 g.

Catalog reference: Dr/4 no. 1a, Dr/2 no. 1b, Dupl. 1282B, Fr-398, Gad-55, KM 41.17.
