France SB118-20185r.jpg

This specimen was lot 20185 in Stack's Bowers 2018 NYINC sale (New York, January 2018), where it sold for $2,280. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Ecu d'Or, 1635-B. Rouen Mint. Louis XIII (1610-43). NGC MS-63. "écu d'or au soleil" struck by the hammer at Rouen for Louis XIII with the obverse legend beginning at the bottom. A common date per Gadoury but seldom seen so nice, sharply struck, brilliant and highly lustrous." Shown is a écu d'or au soleil (gold écu of the sun) struck at the Rouen mint in the last years before the switch to milled coinage in the 1640's. It had a face value of 65 sols tournois. This type was struck at numerous mints 1611-43, i.e., Louis' entire reign. These coins were struck with the hammer and were supposed to be phased out with the introduction of milled coinage in 1640 but écus d'or are known dated as late as 1654. Gadoury prices this as a common date.

Reported Mintage: est. 75,000.

Specification: 3.375 g, .958 fine gold.

Catalog reference: Dr/4 no. 1, Fr-398; KM-51; Gad-55; Dupl-1282A.
