Ethiopia AH 1258 1 mahallek
The Sultanate of Harar was an area in eastern Ethiopia near the border of Somalia. It rose in power in the 1500's and for a time conquered Ethiopia. It was in turn invaded by Egypt in 1875 and also conquered by Ethiopia in 1887. In the 1970's, it formed the war front during protracted hostilities between Ethiopia and Somalia.
This specimen was Lot 1539 in Steve Album auction 11 on September 16, 2011, and sold for US$110. The lot description reads: "HARAR: Abu Bakr II, 1834-1852, AE mahallek, Harar, AH125, Very Fine, R."
