This specimen was lot 40532 in Ponterio sale 168 (Philadelphia, August 2012), where it sold for $2,644. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Eichstatt. Taler, 1757-MF. Sede Vacante. NGC MS-64. Lightly toned and very attractive." The bishopric of Eichstatt, now in Bavaria, occasionally issued coins. "Sede vacante" (vacant seat) thalers were issued on the occasion of the death of the incumbent bishop (or pope) and prior to the elevation of his successor.
