Kunker sale 293, lot 754
Dortmund in 1648
This specimen was lot 754 in Künker sale 293 (Osnabruck, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €1,200 (about US$1,617 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"DORTMUND, STADT, Reichstaler 1635, mit Titel Ferdinands II. R Kl. Prägeschwäche, sehr schön. Exemplar der Slg. Bernhard Terletzki. (Germany, city of Dortmund, thaler of 1635, in the name of Ferdinand II. Scarce, slightly weak strike, very fine, from the Bernhard Terletzki collection.)"
Today, Dortmund is part of the Ruhr valley industrial complex; in the seventeenth century, Dortmund was an insignificant free city sandwiched betwen the duchy of Mark and the bishopric of Munster. The SCWC lists numerous thalers but all are so rare as to lack photographs.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: Berghaus 165, Dav-5212; KM 18.2.
