Deventer, Kampen and Zwolle in 1648
This specimen was lot 1285 in Jean Elsen sale 115 (Brussels, December 2012) where it sold for €600 (about US$916 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"NEDERLAND, DE DRIE RIJKSSTEDEN, (Deventer, Kampen en Zwolle), AR Karolusdaalder, 1555 (tot 1563), Deventer. Droit: MONE NOVA TRIVM CIVITA IMPERIALIVM Geharnast bb. van Keizer Karel radié, met kroon, zwaard en rijksappel. Daarboven vier sterren. Revers: De verbonden drie stedenwapens. Met ZWOLLENSIS. Mooie patina. Ex HSA 6877. Zeer Fraai. (cities of Deventer, Kampen and Zwolle, silver Charles daalder of 1555, Deventer mint. Obverse: armored bust of the emperor with crown, sword and orb; reverse: arms of the three cities linked together. Nice patina, Very fine.)"
The towns of Deventer, Kampen and Zwolle are in central Overijssel and banded together in the mid-sixteenth century to issue coinage.
