This specimen was lot 474 in Stacks-Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2015), where it sold for $998.75. The catalog description[1] noted, "COSTA RICA. 1/16 Peso, 1850-NJ. NGC MS-63. A very high grade with only two higher. Sharp struck with lovely light purple toning over highly reflective surfaces. VERY RARE in this state of preservation. Ex: Whittier Collection." This type was struck 1850, 1855 and 1862 and, tho priced cheaply in the SCWC, is rather scarce.
