This specimen is one of a type struck 1881 only for Colombia at the Heaton mint in Birmingham, England. It is common but does not turn up near as often as the issue from Waterbury (KM 179). The year 1881 also saw the release of a silver quarter décimo from Bogotá and Popayán. The country adopted its current name, "Republica de Colombia," in 1886.

Recorded mintage: 4,000,000.
