Colombia SB816-22243r.jpg

This specimen was lot 22243 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Anaheim, CA, August 2016), where it sold for $117.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "COLOMBIA. 2 1/2 Centavos, 1878. NGC MS-63. The only example seen at NGC. A well struck beauty with light clear apricot tone adding another dimension. Few indeed have survived in anything close to this state of preservation, with the issue seeing heavy attrition on account of the diminutive size." This is from a type struck 1872-81 with reduced silver fineness from the Bogotá mint for Colombia. The Bogotá mint also struck quarter décimos 1863-73 but switched to 2½ centavos for 1872-81. The Popayán mint stuck to quarter décimos until 1881.

Recorded mintage: 347,000.

Specification: 0.90 g, 0.6660 fine silver, 0.0192 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: Restrepo-249.7; KM-169.
