from the Stack's Bowers 2018 NYINC sale, lot 12304
Colombia SB118-12304r.jpg

This specimen was lot 12304 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2018), where it sold for $16,800. The catalog description[1] noted, "The Norweb 1877 Popayán 20 Pesos. Restrepo: One or Two Known. COLOMBIA. 1877 20 Pesos. Popayán mint. MS-62 (PCGS). An exceptional coin regardless of its rarity, an extreme rarity regardless of its grade. Fully lustrous light yellow gold surfaces show a remarkably strong strike from the amateurishly produced dies. The legends are nearly uniformly repunched, all visible without the benefit of magnification. Problem free and very attractive. As this date was listed by Sedwick in 1991, there is likely more than one specimen of this issue, but it is very unlikely any are finer. From the Eldorado Collection of Colombian and Ecuadorian Coins. From Spink America's sale of the Norweb Collection, March 1997, lot 617." This type was struck at Bogotá 1862-77, Medellin 1867-72 and Popayán 1863-78. Despite the steady issue, the type is rare and expensive.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 32.26 g, .900 fine gold, .933 troy oz AGW, 34.5 mm diameter, edge lettered DIOS LEI LIBERTAD.

Catalog reference: Restrepo M339.15, Fr-100; KM 142.2.
