Colombia SB818-42001r.jpg

This specimen was lot 42001 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Philadelphia, August 2018), where it sold for $20,400. The catalog description[1] noted, "Rare and Important One-Year Medio Peso of 1868. Restrepo: Six Known. COLOMBIA. 1868-M Medio Peso. Medellín mint. AU-50 (PCGS). An issue of landmark importance in this series, a one-year type and the debut of this avidly collected denomination. As noted by Restrepo, this is the 'only Colombian coin with the denomination MEDIO PESO,' giving it more significance than either its stature as a great rarity (with an estimated population of just six pieces) or as the first-year of the Medio Peso/5 Decimos/50 Centavos denomination. The surfaces are toned attractive dusky olive gray with darker highlighting around devices and legends. The centers are well struck, and the eye appeal is excellent. A highlight of this collection, even more than some rarer dates, given its importance as the sole year of the Medio Peso type. From the Eldorado Collection of Colombian Coins." Altho the Medellín mint was a prolific issuer of half dollar size coins, this is the only issue denominated MEDIO PESO.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 12.5 g, 0.835 fine silver, 0.335 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: KM 152, Restrepo 292.1.
