The first specimen was lot 16660 in the Whittier sale (Heritage auction 410, Long Beach, June 2006) where it sold for $2,070. The catalog description noted[1], "Republic 1/4 Decimo 1864 Popayán, MS61 NGC, typically crude for this mint but with appealing blue-gray and gold patina. Rare condition!" The second specimen was part of lot 44234 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Philadelphia, August 2018), which sold for $1,920. The catalog description[2] noted, "COLOMBIA. Lot of (7) 1/4 Decimos, 1861-1866. Various Mints. EF-45 (2), AU-50, AU-55, MS-62, MS-63, MS-64 (PCGS). 7 pieces in lot. The 1861-Bogota PCGS MS-64, is a one year issue, well centered and lustrous with attractive light toning, a desirable example of the type. Group of 4 1862-1866-Bogota PCGS EF-45 to MS-63, Restrepo type 246, all fully detailed, well struck and choice, the 1863 MS-63 sports full luster and golden toning. Group of 2 1863 and 1864 Popayan PCGS AU-55 and EF-45, Restrepo-248.3 and 248.4a, both decently struck and untoned. Overall choice selection of interesting types, worthy of strong bidding by the specialist. From the Eldorado Collection of Colombian Coins." Colonial quarter reales of the "Lions and castles" type are known from the Nuevo Reino (Bogotá) and Popayán mints for 1796-1819 (KM 63, KM 67). Cundinamarca quarter reales of debased silver are known for 1814-15 (KM F2) and 1820-22 (KM 79). Republican quarter reales (KM 85) are known for 1826-36. This coin is a quarter decimo, or 1/40 of a peso (a quarter real is 1/32 of a peso); this denomination was struck at Bogotá and Popayán 1860-81 (KM 131, 132, 143, 169). None are common, particularly in nice condition; the specimen shown sold for six times the estimate.
