Colombia 1864-M peso oro
This specimen was lot 1631 in the Eliasberg sale, where it sold for $4,140. The catalog description noted, "1864 1 peso. Medellin mint. MS-62 (NGC). Types as above. Attractive yellow gold with rich orange highlights, bright lustre on reflective fields, numerous reverse scratches. A very rare one year issue with a mintage of 1,072 and only a handful of specimens surviving today. From the John H. Clapp Collection; Clapp estate to Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr., 1942."
Altho this is a rare one year type, similar gold pesos were struck in Colombia in 1856-58 (KM 119), 1862 (KM 135), 1863 (KM 146.1) and 1871-78 (KM 157). Earlier, .875 fine gold pesos were struck 1825-46 and are quite numerous.
