This example is a debased silver one real struck for REPUBLICA DE COLOMBIA from 1827-1834 at the Popayán mint. The initials RU correspond to the assayers. The region was renamed Republica de Nueva Granada in 1837. The second specimen was part of lot 44480 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Philadelphia, August 2018), which sold for $228. The catalog description[1] noted, "COLOMBIA. Lot of (4) Reales, 1928-31. A quartet of collectible Popayán 1 Reales, all encapsulated by: 1828-RU. Restrepo 154.4. F-15; 1828-MF. Restrepo 154.5. F-15; 1830/29-RU. Restrepo 154.11. EF Detail, cleaned; 1831-RU. Restrepo 154.14. F-15. (Total 4 pieces). From the Eldorado Collection of Colombian Coins."
