Colombia SB118-12119r.jpg

This specimen was lot 12119 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2018), where it sold for $1,080. The catalog description[1] noted, "COLOMBIA. 1828-RR 8 Escudos. Bogotá mint. AU Detail — Cleaned (PCGS). Light yellow gold with a bold strike on a broad planchet. Some hairlines and granularity are noted. From the Eldorado Collection of Colombian and Ecuadorian Coins. From Hans M.F. Schulman's sale of May 1968, lot 51." This type was struck at Popayán 1822-36 and at Bogotá 1822-38. It was superseded by the quasi-decimal sixteen pesos issued at both mints 1837-49. Both types are common enough that some attempt to collect complete date sets. This date has a slight premium in the catalog. Assayer RR is listed for 1827-28.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.07 g, .875 fine gold, .761 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: KM 82.1, Fr-67, Restrepo M165.14.
