This specimen was lot 29555 in Heritage sale 3042 (Long Beach, September 2015), where it sold for $1,116.25. The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic gold 8 Escudos 1826 POPAYAN-FM XF40 NGC, Popayán mint. Wholesome and attractive for the designation with even wear and free of distracting handling marks. Scarce in this unflawed condition." This type was struck at Popayán 1822-36 and at Bogotá 1822-38. It was superseded by the quasi-decimal sixteen pesos issued at both mints 1837-49. Both types are common enough that some attempt to collect complete date sets.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Catalog reference: KM 82.2, Onza-1725, Fr-68.
